Te Kano Tasting Room Felton Road
In 2018 SPG was approached by the owners of Te Kano to assist with gaining resource consent from the Central Otago District Council to construct an award winning architecturally designed building to house a cellar door, and tasting facility, as well as operate as a destination for private functions, on their Felton Road vineyard in Bannockburn.
In 2018 SPG was approached by the owners of Te Kano to assist with gaining resource consent from the Central Otago District Council to construct an award winning architecturally designed building to house a cellar door, and tasting facility, as well as operate as a destination for private functions, on their Felton Road vineyard in Bannockburn.
The proposal was processed as a Non-Complying Activity and following successful discussions with adjacent neighbors who provided their written approval, the proposal was considered by the Central Otago District Council’s Hearings Panel where Sean Dent appeared on behalf of Te Kano.
The consent was ultimately granted on a non-notified basis and the premier facility now provides exceptional views from its cantilevered position above the Kawarau River looking out across the incredible landscape of the river terraces and toward the mountains beyond.
Conceived as a treasure box or chest by the architect (Mason & Wales), the simple building form rests lightly on the ground, extends from rows of vines and reaches out towards the river and wider views beyond. The 120m2 building was completed in 2020 and received the 2020 – NZIA Local Award for Architecture and the 2020 – Resene Colour Award for Architecture.
